Introducing local DJ legend Hurricane Emily (@hurricaneemiily), as our next worthy participant in our Everyday Legends series!

Hurricane Emily is a producer & DJ based in Aotearoa, where she’s currently mixing and blending some of her favourite tunes, which she describes as “a mix of acid house, spacey bleeps, percussive bits & more.” You can peep it all in SoundCloud, right now. Emily’s infamous for high energy rave sets, and performed at some of New Zealand's largest music festivals, including @rhythmandvines, @nestfest_nz and most recently @workinglate__, an event that many Aucklanders note as the last big hoorah before the dark, dooming lockdown. 1. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I actually wanted to be a scientist!! I used to love doing those little ‘at home’ experiments as a kid. I remember making a lightbulb glow from a lemon, blew my wee mind.

2. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be?
A cowboy, or a big shot movie director. Dream big haha!

3. Who’s your favourite kiwi artist that we should be keeping an eye on? And why?
Impossible to pick just one! I think Nice Girl, @keducarlo and @edenburnsoneism are all super talented DJs/producers who are only on upwards trajectories, consistently bringing out incredible music. I’m always in awe of their work and using their tracks in my sets.

4. Best way to experience your music?
Ideally live, going hard with your friends on the dance floor. For now, soundtracking your walk through nature is a nice way to enjoy a mix, then shutting your eyes and astral projecting to the club.

5. Best band / solo of all time? Living or not.
Probably Kraftwerk. But if I’m being honest the 2001 & 2005 Gorillaz albums will forever be my favourite.
